Chapter summary
Following the death of Nahash, king of the Ammonites, King David sent messengers to console his son Hanun, but Ammonite princes convinced Hanun that the messengers were spies. Hanun humiliated David's servants by shaving their beards and cutting their garments, prompting David to tell them to stay in Jericho until their beards grew back. Realizing they had become odious to David, the Ammonites hired thousands of chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah, and camped near Medeba. In response, David sent Joab and the entire army of mighty men, leading to a battle where Joab and Abishai divided their forces against the Arameans and the Ammonites, causing both groups to flee. Following this defeat, the Arameans gathered reinforcements from beyond the Euphrates under commander Shophach, but David crossed the Jordan, engaged them in battle, and defeated them, killing thousands of Aramean soldiers and their commander. Consequently, Hadadezer's subjects made peace with David and became his subjects, refusing to help the Ammonites any further.
