Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
After Abijah was buried in the City of David, his son Asa became king, and the land of Judah enjoyed ten years of peace. Asa removed foreign altars, high places, sacred pillars, and Asherah poles, and commanded the people of Judah to seek the Lord and observe His law. During this peaceful period, Asa fortified cities with walls, towers, gates, and bars, and he maintained a large army consisting of 300,000 men from Judah and 280,000 men from Benjamin. Later, Zerah the Cushite marched against Judah with an army of one million men and three hundred chariots as far as Mareshah. Asa deployed his forces in the Valley of Zephathah, prayed to the Lord for help, and went into battle. The Lord struck down the Cushites, causing them to flee toward Gerar while Asa and his army pursued them, defeated them completely, and gathered a large amount of plunder from the surrounding cities and herdsmen's tents before returning to Jerusalem.
