Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem in the ninth year of Zedekiah, breaching the city walls in the eleventh year. Zedekiah and his soldiers fled by night toward the Arabah, but the Chaldean army pursued and captured him in the plains of Jericho, bringing him to Nebuchadnezzar at Riblah. There, the Babylonian king slaughtered Zedekiah's sons and nobles before his eyes, blinded Zedekiah, and bound him in bronze chains to take him to Babylon. The Chaldeans then burned the palace and houses, broke down the walls of Jerusalem, and Nebuzaradan deported the remaining people while leaving behind some poor people with vineyards and fields. Meanwhile, Nebuchadnezzar gave orders to protect Jeremiah, who was released from the courtyard guard and placed in the care of Gedaliah. Additionally, prior to these events, the Lord instructed Jeremiah to tell Ebed-melech the Cushite that he would be delivered from the coming destruction because he trusted in God.
