Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
In the days of King Jehoiakim of Judah, the Lord instructed Jeremiah to bring the house of the Rechabites into a chamber of the house of the Lord and offer them wine. When Jeremiah placed pitchers and cups of wine before them, the Rechabites refused to drink, explaining that their ancestor Jonadab son of Rechab had commanded them never to drink wine, build houses, sow seed, or plant vineyards, but to live in tents all their lives. They stated that they had fully obeyed these ancestral commands, though they had recently entered Jerusalem to escape the invading armies of the Chaldeans and Arameans. Following this encounter, the Lord told Jeremiah to contrast the obedience of the Rechabites with the persistent refusal of the men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem to listen to His words and prophetic warnings. Consequently, the Lord declared that He would bring upon Judah and Jerusalem all the disaster He had pronounced against them due to their disobedience. Finally, Jeremiah communicated the Lord's promise to the house of the Rechabites that Jonadab son of Rechab would never fail to have a man to stand before Him.
