Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
In the third year of King Jehoiakim's reign, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged Jerusalem, captured the king, and took temple articles to Shinar. Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief official, Ashpenaz, to select qualified young Israelite nobles, including Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, to learn Chaldean literature and be trained for royal service. The chief official renamed these four youths Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and assigned them royal food and wine. Daniel requested a ten-day test of only vegetables and water, after which they appeared healthier than the others consuming the king's provisions. Following their three-year training, King Nebuchadnezzar examined them, found them superior to all other advisors, and appointed them to his service, where Daniel remained until the first year of King Cyrus.
