Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
During the reign of King Jehoiakim, Judah was invaded by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, whom Jehoiakim served for three years before rebelling. Following Jehoiakim's death, his son Jehoiachin became king in Jerusalem at age eighteen and reigned for three months while Babylon besieged the city. Jehoiachin, along with his mother, officials, and thousands of captives including skilled craftsmen and men of valor, surrendered and were carried away to Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar also removed all the treasures from the house of the Lord and the royal palace, and appointed Jehoiachin's uncle Mattaniah as king, renaming him Zedekiah. Zedekiah began his eleven-year reign in Jerusalem at age twenty-one, did evil in the sight of the Lord, and ultimately rebelled against the king of Babylon.
