Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash began his forty-year reign in Jerusalem, doing what was right while instructed by Jehoiada the priest, though the high places remained. By his twenty-third year, the temple repairs had not been made by the priests, prompting Joash to direct that money be collected in a chest placed by Jehoiada beside the altar. This funds were then distributed to supervisors who paid the carpenters, builders, masons, and stonecutters to repair the temple without requiring accounting from the trustworthy foremen. Later, when Hazael king of Aram captured Gath and prepared to attack Jerusalem, Joash gave him the sacred objects and gold from the temple and palace treasuries, causing Hazael to withdraw. Finally, Joash was conspired against and killed by his servants Jozabad and Jehozabad at Beth-millo, buried in the City of David, and succeeded by his son Amaziah.
