Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
Following Ahab's death and Moab's rebellion, King Ahaziah of Samaria fell through an upper room lattice and sent messengers to consult Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, regarding his injury. The angel of the LORD instructed Elijah the Tishbite to intercept the messengers and declare that Ahaziah would surely die on his bed. Upon learning the prophet's identity, Ahaziah sent three successive captains with fifty men each to summon Elijah from a hill. Fire from heaven consumed the first two captains and their troops, while the third captain begged for mercy, leading the angel of the LORD to direct Elijah to accompany him to the king. Elijah repeated his fatal message to Ahaziah in person, and the king subsequently died, leaving no son to be succeeded by Jehoram in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat.
