Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
The people of Judah successively installed Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah as kings in Jerusalem, during a period marked by foreign interventions from Egypt and Babylon. After Zedekiah and the leaders of Judah repeatedly rebelled and rejected prophetic warnings, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked Jerusalem, destroying the temple, burning the city walls and palaces, and executing its inhabitants. The Babylonians carried the remaining population into exile as servants, where they remained until the kingdom of Persia rose to power. Finally, in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, a proclamation was issued authorizing the exiled people to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the house of the LORD.
