Chapter summary
The people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah king of Judah at age twenty-two, and he reigned for one year under the wicked counsel of his mother Athaliah, who was from the house of Ahab. Ahaziah joined Joram, king of Israel, in a military campaign against Hazael, king of Aram, at Ramoth-gilead, where Joram was wounded and retreated to Jezreel. While visiting Joram, Ahaziah went out with him to meet Jehu, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. Jehu executed judgment on Ahab's house, killed the rulers of Judah and Ahaziah's relatives, and captured and killed Ahaziah himself. Following Ahaziah's death, Athaliah attempted to destroy all the royal heirs of Judah, but Jehoshabeath rescued Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and hid him in the house of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.
