Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
After King Rehoboam and Israel forsook the Law of the LORD, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem in the fifth year of Rehoboam's reign with a massive army and captured the fortified cities of Judah. In response to the threat, the prophet Shemaiah delivered a message from the LORD to Rehoboam and the leaders gathered in Jerusalem, prompting the king and officials to humble themselves. Consequently, the LORD announced through Shemaiah that He would not destroy them or pour out His wrath through Shishak, though Judah would become subject to Egypt to experience the difference between serving the LORD and serving foreign kings. Shishak then entered Jerusalem and took the treasures of the temple and the royal palace, including Solomon's gold shields, which Rehoboam subsequently replaced with bronze shields used by the palace guards. Because Rehoboam and the leaders humbled themselves, the LORD's anger turned away, averting total destruction and allowing conditions in Judah to improve while Rehoboam continued his seventeen-year reign in Jerusalem. Following continuous warfare with Jeroboam and a reign characterized by doing evil, Rehoboam died, was buried in the City of David, and was succeeded by his son Abijah.
