Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
Rehoboam traveled to Shechem where all Israel gathered to make him king. Jeroboam returned from Egypt upon hearing this news and joined the assembly in asking Rehoboam to lighten the heavy yoke placed upon them by King Solomon. After asking them to return in three days, Rehoboam rejected the counsel of the older men who advised kindness and instead followed the harsh advice of the younger men who grew up with him. When the people returned on the third day, Rehoboam answered them harshly and promised to increase their burden. Consequently, all Israel rejected the house of David, told everyone to return to their tents, and successfully rebelled, leaving Rehoboam to reign only over the Israelites in the cities of Judah after Hadoram, the taskmaster, was stoned to death and Rehoboam fled in his chariot to Jerusalem.
