Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
The Philistines fought against Israel on Mount Gilboa, causing the Israeli forces to flee and suffer many casualties. During the pursuit, the Philistines killed Saul's sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, and critically wounded Saul with arrows. To avoid capture and torture, Saul fell upon his own sword, and his armor-bearer subsequently did the same. Upon learning of the defeat and the deaths of Saul and his sons, Israelites in the surrounding valleys and across the Jordan abandoned their cities to the Philistines. The following day, the Philistines stripped the dead, decapitated Saul, displayed his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths, and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. In response, the valiant men of Jabesh-gilead marched all night to retrieve the bodies of Saul and his sons, burned them at Jabesh, buried their bones under a tamarisk tree, and fasted for seven days.
