Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
Saul chose three thousand men of Israel, keeping two thousand with him at Michmash and sending a thousand with Jonathan to Gibeah. Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, prompting the Philistines to assemble a large army at Michmash, which caused the Israelites to hide in caves, thickets, and cisterns while others crossed the Jordan. Saul waited seven days at Gilgal for Samuel, and when Samuel delayed and troops began to desert, Saul offered the burnt offering himself. Samuel arrived immediately afterward, rebuked Saul for disobeying the command of the LORD, and announced that his kingdom would not endure. Later, Saul and Jonathan stayed in Geba with about six hundred men while Philistine raiders went out in three divisions. Because the Philistines prevented any blacksmiths from operating in Israel, no swords or spears were found among Saul's and Jonathan's troops on the day of battle, except for the weapons held by Saul and Jonathan themselves.
