Berean Standard Bible
Chapter summary
The Philistines fought against Israel on Mount Gilboa, causing the Israelites to flee and many to fall slain. The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons, killing Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, and severely wounding Saul with archers. Faced with imminent capture, Saul took his own sword and fell on it after his armor-bearer refused to kill him, prompting his armor-bearer to do the same. Upon learning of the defeat and deaths of Saul and his sons, the Israelites abandoned their cities, allowing the Philistines to occupy them. The following day, the Philistines stripped the bodies, decapitated Saul, sent his armor and head to their idol temples, and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan. Finally, the valiant men of Jabesh-gilead retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons, buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.
